Physiotherapy Services

the most optimal pain management & physiotherapy care provider in central, hong kong

WE PROVIDE A HOLISTIC DRIVEN APPROACH TO YOUR PAIN CARE & INJURY MANAGEMENT NEEDS.

What is PhysioCare (Physiotherapy/Physical Therapy)?

The World Confederation of Physical Therapy (WCPT) states that Physiotherapists (Physical Therapists) provide services that develop, maintain and restore people’ maximum movement and functional ability, helping any person “at any stage of life, when movement and function are threatened by ageing, injury, diseases, disorders, conditions or environmental factors”. Furthermore, physiotherapist’s are qualified to help maximise your quality of life, identifying potential barriers to your physical, psychological, emotional and social wellbeing, and we help to promote, prevent, treat/intervene, and rehabilitate you back to optimal health. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • A full comprehensive examination/assessment of your needs

  • Evaluation of findings to provide you with a diagnosis, prognosis and clinically effective care plan

  • Implementation of appropriate treatment methods/interventions to maximise your recovery, including recommendations for self-management. This can include massage, acupuncture/dry needling, exercise prescription, or strength & conditioning.

We add our own holistic, long-term approach to the above ‘minimum standards’ as we look to provide you with a proactive care plan that will not only help you recover quickly, but also set you up with the right information and expectations for the future.

Terminology for Physiotherapy

In Hong Kong, the most common description used is either physiotherapy or physical therapy (depending on where you are from in the world), and this can also be shortened to terms such as ‘physio’.

WHAT IS EVIDENCE-BASED PHYSIOTHERAPY & HOW DOES IT IMPACT MY TREATMENT?

Evidence-based physiotherapy (EBP) is an emerging theme in rehabilitation and physiotherapy, and is a term commonly used to describe what research your physiotherapy treatment is based upon. Evidence has different levels of ‘credibility’ as well, but The WCPT defines it as “a commitment to use the best available evidence to inform decision-making about the care of individuals that involves integrating physiotherapy practitioners and individual professional judgement with evidence gained through systematic research”.  As we as a company prefer to consider our importance beyond simply ‘physio only’ research, we prefer to use the definition for evidence-based medicine (EBM) which defines our work as “the integration of best research evidence with clinical expertise and patient values” as it encompasses the human and not just statistics.

For us as a team, we stay up to date through internal and external professional development courses and workshops to make sure we are able to understand the most recent evidence for not only physiotherapy, but also adjunct and collaborative skills and research in areas such as psychology, coaching, and immune/digestive health. This is because our goal is not just to help you ‘fix’ a pain/problem, but to empower you with easy to understand skills and concepts so that you are able to know what to do and how to prevent future related issues.

MORE INFORMATION ABOUT PHYSIOTHERAPY IN HONG KONG

As a general theme, at Momentum, our style and approach to physiotherapy is different to the majority of other providers due to our team and focus when it comes to what we want you to experience and take away from your sessions with us. Hong Kong physiotherapy standards remain strong, however there is still very much a strong reliance on using machines and passive techniques to treat, which we feel is an incomplete approach when we consider ‘best practice’ and EBP/EBM.

WHAT IS DIFFERENT ABOUT OUR PHYSIOTHERAPY SERVICES & TREATMENT?

We take it one step further. Yes, we will still get you pain-free as fast as possible, but beyond your physical pain points, massage, and other treatments, we hope to also spend time getting to know more about you and how you can maximise your integrated healthcare experience with us.

Our consultations have a holistic focus that includes the physical, mental, nutritional and social elements of your life. You can come in for physiotherapy even when you are not in pain. Whether it be our Relieve (Pain Management), Restore (Foundation Training), or Elevate (Performance Optimisation) entry points, the training and recovery focus will be tailored through our Momentum Method to your specific needs to optimise your health and performance.

We prescribe movement as medicine, providing you with the tools to accelerate your recovery through our post-consultation home-exercise programmes, and virtual programmes.

We also offer a complimentary 15-minute consult with our Health Coach, offering you some helpful tips on optimising your body’s recovery environment, and to introduce you to our 5 pillars of health. Just let us know when you contact us if you’d like to reserve your spot. For more information on our Health Coaching approach and benefits, please click here.

WHAT DOES A PHYSIOCARE (PHYSIOTHERAPY) CONSULT AT MOMENTUM LOOK LIKE?

Our PhysioCare consults are provided by our team of internationally trained physiotherapists, and you can access them at different points through our Client Lifecycle. Whether it be for pain relief (RELIEVE), movement and/or function restoration (RESTORE), or to work with us to enhance your physical or sporting performance (ELEVATE), your time with us will feel successful.

Your Discovery Consult will be our first time meeting, where the focus will be on us starting a meaningful relationship where we make sure you leave feeling more confident about the prognosis, comfortable with us and the diagnosis, and motivated to achieve the goals we set out together that will be achieved after a successful assessment, diagnosis and treatment plan is created, and of course, feeling better than when you came in.

Initial Assessment
Your physiotherapist will start with a subjective assessment, asking open ended questions to get a better picture of what’s going on. From signs and symptoms, what eases and aggravates the issue, to most importantly, finding out what it’s preventing you from doing. We use motivational interviewing to find out how your values and beliefs have and will affect your recovery, as well as enabling us to address a greater scope to your recovery (not just your physical, but also your mental and social wellbeing) so we can achieve ‘health beyond treatment’. The objective testing portion includes a physical assessment of your movement, posture, joint and muscle health, strength and mobility, and tests/questionnaires (if required for specific conditions/diseases e.g. cancer or osteoarthritis).

Diagnosis
Your diagnosis will be a result of the clinical decision made by your physiotherapist from a combination of critical thinking and the results from your subjective and objective assessment. It could be a straightforward diagnosis such as an ACL tear, or a more complex scenario such as non-specific lower back pain which is a multifaceted issue. For us, the diagnosis however should not be the important takeaway, but the prognosis, plan and confidence knowing there is not only a short- but long-term solution for you.

Treatment & Subsequent Consults
Manual therapy is a term commonly used to describe hands-on treatment. There are many different techniques that can be used when a physiotherapist is treating you, which can include but not limited to; trigger point therapy, fascial release, lymphatic drainage, dry needling or acupuncture, joint mobilisations, and stretch therapy to name a few. These treatment methods are used more commonly for relieving pain, restoring optimal joint movement, or simple for muscle recovery. They tend to be more prominent during your earlier consults, especially if you’re in pain. Subsequent sessions will focus on more the proactive approach to our physiotherapy treatment, which is where we encourage and apply an more collaborative and active treatment model through exercise prescription, lifestyle/habit change, and if needed, long-term planning with you and/or your personal trainer so you can stay doing what you love more and more.

WHY DO CLIENTS CHOOSE MOMENTUM AS THEIR PHYSIOTHERAPY & INJURY/PAIN CARE PROVIDER?

At Momentum, we understand there are two key ingredients to our success; our team and our community of clients – you. Through continuous feedback from our team and community, we believe we have become their trusted provider for all their pain, injury care and performance-related needs by staying true to who we are as individuals, and combining that with our Momentum Method Standards of Care. These are based off our values as a company, and when combined with a determination to provide the best care and experience that goes beyond the status quo, we believe the following characteristics is what makes us who we are:

  1. We are passionate, proactive educators – focusing on providing you with guiding evidence-based principles to optimise your own understanding of what’s going on, how we both play an active role in your health and fitness goals, and to incorporate our Momentum Method to empower a more proactive, self-care approach with you.

  2. We are innovators – our drive is to elevate the standards of care provided in Hong Kong. We know through evidence-based practice/medicine, you will not only receive the best treatment for yourself, but you will leave knowing what standard of care you should be expecting when visiting other allied health and medical professionals in the future. It’s not just about the science, but also about you; the individual.

  3. We are a trusted provider of physiotherapy services in our community – our referral sources not only come from our amazing client community, but also from our great network of trusted health, medical, fitness and wellness professionals. They understand how we work and why we’re not your run of the mill provider.

  4. We are a team – from start to finish, we make sure you know we are working together to achieve our goal. You may think your goals are just for you, but they’re not. We get to witness your progress and success just as much as you do, and you may not know this, but it’s something that contributes to us loving our work even more.

  5. We include you more in ‘the process’ than you think –from the design of our space, the format of our consults, and to how we interact with you, we know from experience what it takes to be successful in helping you not only recover faster, but to reduce the risk of it recurring in the future.

  6. We understand the psychology of pain care and human nature – We understand the science and our role to play as physiotherapist’s, but we have also walked in your shoes as clients ourselves. We apply best practice care because we approach your care from both sides; as the physio as well as the client.

  7. We make ourselves available to you – we are not a ‘conveyor belt’ style of physiotherapy provider, nor are we a ‘single provider’ service. From Sheffield, our Head of Operations and Certified Health Coach, to our team of clinicians, you have access to all of us the moment you step through our doors. You will notice our follow-ups won’t be like your other experiences with others in our profession because of the way we like to work, ensuring you know you don’t only have contact with us when you’re physically in our space, but also when it is needed outside of it too.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN OUR PHYSIOTHERAPY, CHIROPRACTIC AND OTHER CONSULTS/SESSIONS?

We as a company are different in the sense that it is not our professional titles (physiotherapist, chiropractor, massage therapist) that defines us or our style of treatment. Our titles differentiate us to the world, but when you visit us and get the chance to be co-treated by our team, you will find that we work well as a team because we all have a proactive care approach to our treatment, we all have slightly different skills and expertise, but our goal remains the same; to help you achieve your goals and reason why you came to us in the first place.

HOW DO I KNOW WHO IS THE BEST PERSON TO SEE FOR WHAT I NEED?

The majority of our clients come through via direct referrals from past/existing clients and our health, medical and fitness network. When they do, they are commonly recommended to see a particular individual on our team. This may be different for you if you were not given a name to ask for, but don’t worry, you can speak to Sheffield, our Head of Operations, who can help refer you to the best person for your needs, or she can help arrange for you to speak to one of our clinical team as we do offer 10-minute complimentary assessment calls.

DO I NEED TO SEE A GENERAL PRACTITIONER (GP) OR SPECIALIST FIRST BEFORE COMING IN?

Put simply, No (unless your medical insurance requires you to for claiming purposes only). With regards to who is best to see first, we do recommend you see our physiotherapists as we are considered ‘first line’ providers when it comes to musculoskeletal and neuromuscular injuries and conditions. Especially when it comes to acute injuries (e.g. ankle sprains, suspected muscle tears, or joint pain), you are better off contacting us for some advice to reduce the initial stress and worry. It also gives us an opportunity to provide you with some professional advice without needing to necessarily see us in person.

IS PHYSIOTHERAPY COVERED UNDER HEALTH INSURANCE in hong kong?

This depends on the type of medical/health insurance you have as different policies offer varying levels of coverage. Some insurance providers require you to visit a GP first so that your physiotherapy sessions can be covered by your insurance, while others do not. Please check with your insurance provider before coming in. If you are in need of a GP (whether more family-focused or sports-specialised), please ask us for a recommendation.

DO YOU ONLY TREAT SPORTY AND ATHLETIC PEOPLE?

No. Although our reputation is strong within the sporting community in Hong Kong, our team of physiotherapists are well educated and trained in specialised areas within the physiotherapy profession that include but not limited to; chronic musculoskeletal (osteoarthritis, osteoporosis), neurological (Parkinson’s disease, MS, post stroke recovery), cardiovascular (post heart attack recovery, post-operative recovery), metabolic (diabetes), rheumatology (rheumatoid arthritis), or women’s health (pregnancy-related health) conditions.

HOW MANY SESSIONS/CONSULTS WILL IT TAKE FOR ME TO BE BETTER?

It is hard to say as it is heavily dependent on the individual case. We do our best to ensure we get you out of pain as soon as possible, but we consider this the easy part. Keeping you out of pain is a better goal for us to work on together, especially if you’re active and it’s a recurring issue. Rest assured, from the first consultation, we are working hard to expedite your recovery and get you back to doing what you love.

WHEN SHOULD I BE BOOKING A CONSULTATION?

If you are experiencing any musculoskeletal pain or injury, or you have long-term mobility and movement restrictions, then you will benefit from our Discovery Consult. Symptoms you may be experiencing might include pain (after an injury), a niggling issue that has been impacting the life you want to live, or a long-term diagnosed or undiagnosed condition that you want to overcome. If you’re not quite sure, please give us a call or send us a message (+852 9339 3202) and find out how we can help you. Our PhysioCare consults are medically-insurable.
